The Former President's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual danger confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
