At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
